UCF Circus Scholarships for Youth at Risk Just over a year ago the Lolly Jar Circus applied for a small grant to enable them to award two (2) one-year scholarships to deserving but disadvantaged young people. Read about that first grant.
Lolly Jar Circus (LJC) was formed in 2013 with the aim of improving the lives of young people through regular circus classes.
There are many activities and they can be adapted to needs and abilities, so that everyone is engaged and achieves. A third of their participants are on the autism spectrum. Others have chromosomal or muscular disorders. LJC now have a significant number of young people who are under State Guardianship. Siblings and friends who are able and settled share the same classes and activities and there is mutual respect.LJC applied once again and requested $2,000 to support 2 scholarships for new participants, who would otherwise not be able to afford them, for one year.
The aim of the project would be to give 2 new participants a social outlet that is also healthy and would boost their confidence and self-esteem, with flow-on effects to the rest of their lives. They would have a lot of fun and make friends. Their parents and carers would also meet other adults with whom they could make connections.
The reason LJC have the lid off the lolly jar in their logo is because they believe that they give “the lollies” happiness, confidence and skills that they can take with them as they bounce out into the world.
The funds will be used to pay for a year of classes (40) at the actual cost of $25 per year.
The actual cost to run a class is $25 per person (venue hire, trainer wages etc). The concession cost is $12.50 (which LJC supplement by fundraising and outreach events), but even this small charge in not achievable for many families.
Lolly Jar Circus is run entirely by volunteers. Although the trainers are paid, the board and CEO are all volunteers.
The UCF directors were delighted once again to approve this application for $2,000 so that two young people can have a joyful, rewarding, learning experience over the next 12 months.
